The Move
Time Out New York, April 20-26, 2007 by Emily Weiner
Beginner For strength | Sideways arch
"You can simultaneously tone the sides of the body while stretching the muscles in the back and shoulders," explains Jennifer McCasland Daly. Sit in a chair and "grab behind your right ear with your right hand," she directs. "On an exhale, arch toward that elbow and extend your ribs toward the ceiling." Inhale, passing through an upright position, and repeat on the left. Complete five on each side.

Advanced For strength | Big Cradle
According to McCasland Daly, "this abdominal exercise strengthens the deep postural muscles surrounding the spine." Start in a curled position, balancing on your butt and palms. Lower yourself one vertebrae at a time, "until your elbows lower to the floor," she instructs. "Engage your abs to pull yourself up to the starting position." Repeat five times.
